Some of my thoughts on MacWorld San Francisco
While I’m all for large displays on laptops, 17 inches is a little much. I bought the biggest display I could get on my laptop, 15.1 inches, and I don’t think I’d want to any bigger than that. I think 15 inches is about the best balance between not too small and not too large and cumbersome. But if you’re making a larger screen, why not include a larger keyboard to go with it? There’s plenty of room for it.
Good to see Firewire 800 isn’t vapor after all. Too bad they’re not putting it in the 15 inch Powerbooks yet.
Speaking of the 15 inch Powerbook being left out in the cold, both Bluetooth and 802.11g (going by the stupid name “Airport Extreme“) are built into both the 12 and 17 inch Powerbooks, but not the 15. After a second look I see the 12 inch doesn’t have it built-in, but it’s “Airport Extreme Ready”, while the 15 inch is not. I’d like to see the backlit keyboard added to the 15 inch model as well; it’s currently only available with the 17.
OS X now has its own web browser, Safari. I wonder why they built it on Konqueror’s KHTML rendering engine instead of Mozilla’s Gecko? I don’t really have an opinion on that; I don’t know anything about KHTML because I don’t care much for Konqueror. When I heard the browser rumor last week I was sure they were going to adopt Chimera, which seems to be coming along nicely.
OS X now comes with X11 built in. That rules. I wonder if they’ve made it suck less.

I don’t know if it has the same part number or not, but it appears that the 15″ TiBook has not changed, save for the price drop. In a way that’s good for me, because maybe I have a shot at finally receiving the one I ordered TWO MONTHS AGO.
But it sucks that I cannot get the new airport card in it! I definitely still want the 15″.

At least you’ll be able to save a couple hundred dollars now. What was the previous retail price?

Even worse, it doesn’t look like you can even put a new Airport card in it. According to its information in the Apple Store, the Airport Extreme card requires an Airport Extreme-ready system (check the very bottom of the page).
